HISTORY
The Youngstown Ski club was established in 1958 as a nonprofit organization. The original purpose of the Club was to promote the sport of snow skiing along with club sponsored social events for skiers and thrill seekers. By introducing new skiers to people who excelled in the sport, we gave rise to a whole new meaning of fun and excitement. From numerous outdoor activities, athletic events, and various social events throughout the year, the Club gained interest to travel to many skiing destinations.
Because of the challenge put forth by the hard work from the Officers and Trustees, membership grew from a few founding members to various enthusiasts with all levels of skiing ability, thus membership was maintained by a couple hundred. As an abundance of interest increased, membership was capped at three hundred (300) and additional people were placed on a waiting list. This was THE Club to be part of during its most fortunate years!
The original camaraderie and can-do attitude spread to all endeavors and events sponsored by the Club. With strong commitments to make skiing more affordable, members applied their trade to the many fund raisers throughout the years. By gaining subsidies through events such as Corn Roasts, picnics, sporting events, bake sales, lotteries, auctions, and the Annual Wine Taste, the Club was able to defray the increasing costs of travel and skiing. With increasing interest, events and trips gathered people by the hundreds, and often multiple busses were utilized…
Today, the Youngstown Ski Club continues to establish the same willingness and camaraderie in all events. Due to the rising costs and economic hardships associated with this sport, we remain committed to making trips and events more enjoyable and affordable. With the ever-increasing interest in snow boarding as well as skiing, we strive to ensure all members receive special attention. We aim to meet, make, and retain lasting friendships in all that we do; hence, we have grown into more of a Social Club than simply just a ski club. In fact, we experience numerous social non-skiing memberships each year. Every Officer, Trustee, and member that volunteers their time contributes to the success and growth of the Club. It is through this collective effort that the Club has survived and maintained the efforts originally established.
New Members join every season as they witness the enthusiasm and fun displayed through all the events and social gatherings. The Youngstown Ski Club is here to serve our members, and not the other way around. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to share their experiences with others. The club is what you, the member, make it to be. Club meetings, which are open to all members and interested individuals, are held monthly at the Youngstown Sports Grille in Boardman. Your input is strongly recommended and all questions and comments are reviewed. Past events, trips, and ideas are evaluated and recommendations are discussed.
